Some artist like to spend a lot of time sketching and diving into long written drafts before getting into final art. A lot of times for me it’s the opposite. I find creating a cover or diving into a full spread really helps tease out ideas, define characters, and honestly test whether or not I will enjoy making it in the end. For instance, Ollie started out as a dinosaur because I thought it would be fun and children love dinos, but as the stories were teased out more it quickly became clear that he needed to be a dragon. So, I changed it. No big deal; But it would have never gotten to this new idea for Addy and Ollie if I didn’t just create first.
